Message The rotational mass only gains momentum when the cylinders are firing, thus when the spark/fuel is cut, decelleration begins immediately - thanks to friction as you stated, and the momentum of the piston/rod assemblies constantly accelerating in different directions. The only way to spin past the rev limiter is if the cylinder fire(s) between the rpm polling points push it past the critical rotational velocity, and even then it would be less than a few rpms.
